In this post, I’ll show you 3 free tools that will improve your email copy.

As you read this post, remember that your first draft is the first draft.

Although I’m a certified copywriter, writing is more the practice of a skill.  It isn’t inspiration or creativity alone.

If you need to write promotional emails, these tips will help you write effective emails.

 

What Is the Reason for Your Email?

Before you tap on your keyboard, consider the big idea.

Most people don’t appreciate long-drawn-out emails. Delete is a right-click away.

The big idea will help you communicate your message, engage your readers, and get to the point.

Once you’re clear about your big idea, ask yourself three questions.

  •  What do I want them to think?
    • This is about belief.
    • What do you want them to believe about your email content?
  • What do I want them to feel?
    • Feel, or emotions connect your readers with their pain, frustration, or problem.
    • You empathize with their needs.
  • What do I want them to do?
    • You have a reason for your email.
    • Perhaps you want to lead them to your weekly free content.
    • You may want them to register for a free event or buy a small resource.
    • Every email should have a call to action, even if it’s to ponder a weekly quote.

 

Make Your Emails Conversational

When we write emails, we’re connecting human to human. You don’t want to come across as the all-knowing, omnipresent guru.

Nor do you want to barf all your struggles and pains.

You want to be relatable and authentic. Be yourself. Position yourself as a guide and friend.

Here are five ways you can become more conversational.

  • Don’t use jargon.
    • Not everyone understands your industry terms.
  • Keep the sentences short.
    • It makes it easier for mobile users.
  • Use simple words and contractions.
    • has not–change to hasn’t
    • I would–change to I’d
    • Should not–change to shouldn’t
  • Don’t try to sound smart.
    • Consider Theodore Roosevelt’s quote below.
  • Create whitespace and use bullet points whenever possible.
    • Your result should be a scannable email.

The Flesch-Kincaid Method is a researched-based formula. Without getting too complicated, many writers aim for easy reading.

  • Classic bestsellers like Of Mice and Men, Lord of the Flies, and For Whom the Bell Tolls are at a 5.0 reading level.
  • Newspapers (what’s left of them) and articles don’t exceed a 5-10-grade level.
  • Lowering the reading level of your email copy can make your emails more effective.
